The list is broken down into pre-race, swim, bike, run and post-race items. Many items are used in more than one segment of a race but are included in the list only once. For example, the headlamp could be used to see in the transition area on the morning of the race and, if needed, after dark on the run. Nutrition will be taken when need throughout the day. I bring 2 sets of wheels just in case something happens to one set prior to a race. The weather also added an unknown that has to be planned for days in advance. I brought my Giro Advantage 2 aero helmet and my Bell Sweep helmet to the Ironman Augusta 70.3. If it had been hot I would have worn the Bell helmet. Since it was cold and rainy I wore the Giro with to concern for over-heating. I was glad I brought both.
Nutrition can be a list in itself with Gatorade, Muscle Milk, salt tablets, Perpetuem, Clif bars, GU energy gel and the hydration system and bento box to carry it all.
I always drink a smoothie before a race so I have to be sure to pack my blender and ingredients.
